Do you pay for an employee's pre-employment training?

We have hired a few people in the last few months that were asked to attend a training prior to their employment start date. I said we should pay them, but other don't agree. What have you done? Can you suggest a place for me to pull some hard data on this?

It depends on whether the training was required for them to get the position or if they were hired and then required to go before their start date. In the latter case, the class would have been their start date and it is compensable. If they could not be hired without the class, it's part of a conditional offer and up to them to take it in order to get the job; therefore, not compensable.

If I take your post literally, you "hired" them then asked them to train, which would indicate some sort of an orientation. They should be paid if that's the case.

Exactly. If you hired them, they must be paid for the training even if it occurs prior to their first day 'live and on the job.'

If you made it part of a conditional offer, the choice is theirs. They either take the class to be eligible for the position or they choose to not take the class nor the job.

We often have the same issue here. If hired, they are ours and paid - if the offer is conditional, they're on their own.

I think he had to empty all of his bottles so they would survive the storm and the only way he could think of to do it was drink the contents. So......

I live in TN, work in KY - has it stopped raining where you are yet? It's starting to clear here - so I don't have a good excuse to empty any bottles..drat!
