Using Fleet Trucks for Commuting

We presently allow our field service technicians to take the company truck home and use it for commuting back and forth to work. This works well for both, employees and employer, because the service tech will sometimes go right to the job site from home. Plus our service techs are "on call" from time to time. My question is does anyone out there have a policy regarding how far an employee can live from work in a situation like this? When we interview for new service techs, we do consider how far the person lives from work. With the price of gas, we don't want our techs living too far away. We are even thinking of coming up with some kind of incentive for those who live close to work. Does anyone have a similar situation?

  • LarryC: We have personal use of company fleet veichles for one purpose on call maintenance situations at any hour of the night. Now, they are allowed to stop off at the grocery store to pick up a loaf of bread on the way home, or stop by the grocery store to pick-up a daily lunch. Company vehicles including my own is not authorized as relacement of a personal owned vehicle. Any personal use such as driving back and forth to a fixed known work site from home to work or vice versa must keep record of that use and turn it in to accounting for calculation of a 1099. We also have a rule pertaining to personnel use and becoming involved in a vehicle accident and it be developed as an atfault accident. Then the employee is responsible for the cost of the accident and will be terminated. Our insurance carrier does not cover vehicle fleet that is not on a company mission except at a $1 Million dollar deductable and only for damage to other's property. Therefore, the company may be responsible for the other parties' collison and property loss if any but not until the damages exceed 1 mill; it comes off of the bottom line!
