Unusual Call at Work/What to do?

This morning I received a call from a person who has not worked here stating she referred a person for a job and she didn't think it was fair that they received a job and she didn't. The person on the phone could hardly form a sentence.She didn't tellme her name. I had to ask for it and then I had to ask for her last name. I asked what job she was talking about. She said in shipping. We have temps in our distrubtion area and most of our jobs in this department we try out first with an agency. I told her we didn't have any openings and all of these jobs go thru an agency so I didn't know what she was talking about. She kept saying she didn't think it was fair. Finally, I told her this is a moot discussion as I don't know her and we don't have any openings. Then she says she didn't think it was fair that you had to sleep w/ a manager to get a job. This caught me totally offguard as I stated we go thru a temp agency and most of the time for packers, etc we don't even interview. She then hung up.

Like I said, we don't even have a person here by the name given to me. Am I missing something or should have listened more to a person who doesn't even work here or we have interviewed?

I would chalk this up to an unfortunate phone call and leave it at that. You have nothing to do with regard to this matter and the only piece of hard information you have is her name. You hire your shipping people through an agency and they do all the screening and selection, the person she refers to doesn't work there, you've never heard of the caller, I'm assuming there's no record of her ever having applied. I don't see where you face any exposure in this matter.

#1 thing a consultant shouldn't say: "I could tell you the answer right now, but we're committed to a three month project..." #-o

Sounds like a nut to me. I would have put an end to the conversation just as quickly as possible.

I got a call last week form a person who had submitted her resume wanting to know why she didn't get an interview. She was highly qualified and just couldn't understand it. She said she thought she was being discriminated against because of her age. I replied "M'am I have no way of knowing what your age is from your resume." Long pause and then "Well, thank you for your time."

Guess what, I hunted up the resume and tossed it!

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking she's a nut case as well. I looked through my resume batches and didn't see her name at all.

Call me overly cautious but there's a chance you may hear from this person again. She could be interested in filing some form of charge and the call was her attempting to set the stage. Suggest you document to the best of your memory, every word she said and your replies.
