Breakdown after First Day Employed

We have a new employee, whose first day was Thursday. Today, on Friday, we received a call from his wife that he's in the hospital with a nervous breakdown. The hiring manager wants to fire him and fill the position with their 2nd choice. I'm saying he may be covered by ADA and state disability laws. We're waiting for more information. My question is, if he needs time for treatment, how much time would you allow for a one-day employee? Our attendance policy starts discipline at 6 days absence and termination at 12.
