letter of resignation

An employee submitted a letter of resignation, with an effective date 2 weeks from the date of the letter. We accepted the letter, but now have decided to ask them to leave 1 week early. Are we required to pay this employee (exempt status) through the date in the letter? I am in Florida.

If in your Employee Handbook it is stated that the company expects or requires at least a two week notice, then it is best to pay them in lieu of notice. Because they will more than likely be able to get the pay in the long run, should they pursue it.
