letter of resignation

An employee submitted a letter of resignation, with an effective date 2 weeks from the date of the letter. We accepted the letter, but now have decided to ask them to leave 1 week early. Are we required to pay this employee (exempt status) through the date in the letter? I am in Florida.

No, you don't have to pay the full two weeks, BUT if you don't, the resignation will become a termination and the former employee will be able to collect Unemployment benefits.

Wait until tomorrow afternoon (end of first week). Visit their office or cubicle and tell them you're gonna go ahead and let them leave and they'll be paid on your next paydate for the following week. If you announce it today, they'll be worth less tomorrow than they would have already been. It's true about the unemployment.

If in your Employee Handbook it is stated that the company expects or requires at least a two week notice, then it is best to pay them in lieu of notice. Because they will more than likely be able to get the pay in the long run, should they pursue it.
