Mandatory direct deposit resources?

Does anyone know of a resource that would list which states allow mandatory direct deposit? Also, if legal in a particular state - anyone see any reason why direct deposit could not be a condition of employment? I know there are pros & cons to this, but I'm mainly just looking for the resource. Thanks!

try your state's dept. of labor website...maybe that will tell you.

We implemented mandatory direct deposit last year...we were required to have a "back up" bank for individuals that may not qualify for a checking account due to credit or other issues. We partnered with a local credit union...and so far, so good. It's reduced costs for us...and we've not had to stop payment and reissue on a lost check!

I do not beleive there is such a law/polciy/regulation, etc that mandate an employee use direct deposit. we overcame that issue (per our attorney) by adding to our policy a notice which states that while DD is a benefit to both the EE and the ER; however, the company will take no steps to expedite a replacement check when the original one has been lost, missing, stolen until such time the bank has verified the stop payment order. the fact that we were not going to jump through hoops to replace a missing payroll check did a lot to encourage EE's to use DD.

There are state specific laws that in some states, allow you to mandate direct deposit. Our payroll programmer has the list of each state and I'll see if I can get my hands on it. I'll at least be able to give you the info as to where he got it.
