Need help with employee theme

We are having a theme week for HR and employees which will tie into our employee day. We are giving out umbrellas as an employee gift. We are looking for some kind of theme to go with it, and to hand out something else little. Or we can go with a theme unrelated to the umbrella and just with the other little things we give out. Any ideas? Anyone else have any theme days that maybe tie into spring? HELP!

You can do something like "April Showers bring May flowers" give out umbrellas and flowers.

Depending on the type of weather you have you can make it a day at the beach with a beach umbrella and a beach ball. But that would probably be more for summer.

How about thing with "Spring Fever" and tie it into anything thats happening that's exciting for the employees.

How about Hawaiian Day? All come to work in a colorful shirt. You could give away leis.

Mexican Day? Play Mexican music, serve Mexican food for lunch. Decorate with pinatas.

Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day are in May. How about red, white and blue day?

I like the spring fever suggestion. You could take a red pen and draw little dots on your face too.

God, I hate stuff like this. It's like when there's a company function and all the HR people have to dess up in stupid costumes in order to "get people excited." Why is it our job to look like idiots? How about just circulating a directive memo ordering to people to "get excited" or face disciplinary measures? I like that solution much better. I feel better now. Thanks for letting me vent.

Crout, I feel your pain. Sometimes I think the title "Cruise Director" (like whats-her-name on the Love Boat) is the alter-ego of HR professionals. Half the time when someone comes into my office I feel like saying, "Hi! How can I make your cruise more enjoyable today? What?! You didn't get a chocolate mint on your pillow last night?! I'm so ashamed!"

Nevertheless, this question deserves more than just a rant from the likes of us. Okay, how about this: If you have to have a Theme Day, how about something beneficial like a kick-off day for a 6-week fitness challenge? Tie it in with spring being a time for renewal and a renewed commitment to health.

In today's climate of diversity in the work place how about welcoming the employees to wear a piece of clothing that represents their heritage or where they were born, or bring in some article that represents their heritage? Irish kilt, Hawaiin shirt/dress, cowboy hat, the list goes on and on.

Another idea is to have the employees bring in something that is near and dear to them and to explain the significanc, but this usually works best with smaller groups.

Other than the Singing in the Rain and the April Showers themes which I instantly thought of as well, you could tie it into other things having to do with Spring. Sports, local state or town tradition, etc.

Have a local baseball team thats doing well? You could tie it into that. Have people wear their baseball jerseys or hats and have contests based upon baseball theme.

Since this is an employees day, why don't you have the employees come up with a theme and plan the whole thing? HR could facilitate to make sure that the event goes well and pigggyback to take care of the HR stuff you need to get done, but like Crout, I don't like HR - the Party People. Parties are nice though.
