Per Diem ?

These are hourly field employees, not office employees. We will of course be covering the cost of the apartment. We are going to give them a per diem for food, but have been unsure of how much. I was hoping my fellow formites would help me and share what their company, or others they know of pay for a per diem. Thanks, I appreciate your help.

The guys we send out stay in company-paid apartments, too, and use company vehicles for travelling. Their only expense is meals. They turn in their meal receipts and we pay them. We don't pay a per diem for office staff.

We go by the IRS list for cities. Some per diems are higher due to the area.

Plans that pay per diem eliminate the need for employees to substantiate expenses or have these monies included in the W-2. However, days of travel must be accounted for and the per diem cannot be over the Federal amount or for more days than the employee was actually on the trip. These can be M&IE (meals and incidental expenses) or also include lodging. The General Services Administration publishes rates for travel in the continental U.S. (the CONUS rates) in the Federal Register. You go by the rate in the city or the nearest big city. Typical rates run from high forties to low thirties depending on how expensive the area might be.

Our standard is 44.00/per day, assuming that you'll be away from home during the full 24 hours. We do have larger amounts for areas with higher living costs.

Our per diem has been $30 per day since 1996.
