Exact graduation date?

Does anybody expect, when asking for a graduation date on an application, the actual day of the graduation? I have always assumed that month and year, or even just the year, were enough. I personally have no idea on which day of the month I graduated from high school or college.
I ask because my wife's employer is requesting it from her and she's asking me why and all I can tell her is that they must be idiots. Or am I wrong? Is there some reason you'd ask for that?

Personally I can't think of a single good reason why that would be needed. Only conceivable reason I could think of would be if it were part of some comprehensive background check, but even at that I can't understand why some investigative agency would need an exact graduation date.

Sounds odd to me too. I do not know of a reason why that would be necessary. I think someone may have the useless detail disease.

we give an educational incentive of x number of dollars per pay period from the date of graduation.
possibly this could be for financial benefit determination?

previous post should indicate that the financial package is, of course, after hiring and assuming the graduation took place after the hire date.

NOW all you need to do is guess which the employer wants, the actual date of commencement OR the date the degree/diploma was signed.

Doesn't make sense because I'm sure they already know how old she is. Mcreosote said her employer, not potential employer, so they would already have her age from her I-9, etc.

Thats exactly what I thought. I can't think of a good reason that information is necessary. It teeters on the edge of outright asking for one's age.

Maybe your wife could address the stupidity by asking the askers the date their graduation - exactly!

It is my understanding that you cannot ask for high school graduation date, even the year because it, more often than not, will tell you the person's age. I think it's an illegal question.

Obviously, my post wasn't clear. I wasn't suggesting that the anyone ask the candidate the exact date of graduation. My suggestion was that the person who was asked to do this, respond by asking those who want to do it what the exact date of their graduation was. That should point out the stupidity of the request.
