Policy on Pets in the workplace

We are a youth counseling agency and some of our therapists have certified therapy dogs that they bring to their sessions. Our insurance broker tells us that we are covered for this and as long as the therapist is performing his/her work with the animal, they are covered for any possible liability issues.. I'm looking for a policy on pets in the workplace, so that we can define just who can and cannot bring their pets to work. Anyone out there who has such a policy?

I recently read about a company that has pets in the workplace on a regular basis. It's called ERC Dataplus, Inc. and their website is [url]www.ercdataplus.com[/url]
The book I read this in was published in 2001, so no idea if they still do this or not. Perhaps if you write to the HR Director he or she will share their policy with you.

Thats a great idea that has worked well in so many situations. Nursing homes use animals alot with tremendous success. But there is certainly a distinct difference between a counselor bringing in an animal for therapy and another employee bringing in the family pet. There is a site called Delta Society that provides pet therapy services...maybe they can help or refer you to an organization that has a policy.

We have a policy that is very straightforward. Only service animals are allowed in our building. There are just too many issues to allow the family pet in the building. Our clients include families with small children. I can imagine how bad it could get if a child was bitten or injured by someone's pet, not to mention the hygiene issues.
