Alcohol policy vs. sales & marketing staff

We are a telecommunications company adding our first sales & marketing rep. to our staff. Our current alcohol policy is that drinking and work don't go together - but how do we manage this and a salesman who is expected to go out and woo protential clients? Thanks!

  • The old days of having to get clients sloshed to make a sale are long gone. We don't allow our EE's to drink during work hours period. Whether or not they are being wooed by a salesman. If the product is not sensible, the alcohol shouldn't be relied upon to make the difference.

    That is not to say it does not happen in the real world. The last place I worked that had salesmen were not allowed to put any alcohol on their expense reports. We required all receipts and if any showed alcohol, they were not reimbursed.
