New Supervisor

Our Company is growing and so we are adding more supervisors. Does anyone out there have steps or procedures that you follow when training in new supervisors. We have come up with some of our own, but to get some input from other companies would be helpful.

We do have required training material for supervisors. Being ISO certified also requires that we have verification of training so we also have assessment / validation testing after each part of our training. Other than the site specific training, we use the Seven Danger Zones for Supervisors by M. Lee Smith,(Send my endorsement check to..) also How to Discipline Employees & Correct Performance Problems, and a series on Communication in the Workplace. These along with the normal Diversity, Harrasment and Drug Awareness classes have worked very well for us.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet the house that my reference to those there training videos from that there company down here in Bent-Woods TN
will remain posted.

Do you call that "selective" censoring???

Ten Danger Zones has gotten some pretty good press, although I haven't viewed it at all. I just take everyone's word for it. However, I CAN tell you that they're running some sort of introductory special where you get the whole thing for $799 or something like that. I have an extensive video training library and I can tell you that often a SINGLE video will cost you that much. Looks like a good deal. I just can't justify it with all the stuff I already have or I'd buy it.

Some other good videos are: "In This Together" which discusses harassment and not just in terms of sexual harassment and "Keeping the Good Ones" which discusses keys to retaining associates that you want to keep.

Other suggestions are on communication styles - a tendency is to think that everyone reacts the same way we do - a breakdown using either the Myers-Briggs or DISC is a nice ice-breaker and a way to get things off on the right foot.

Other critical items are Legal updates and interviewing skills.

We use "Ten Danger Zones." Yes, it's worth the money. We add other materials, in fact - some of our ice-breakers and scenarios come from this Forum.

We did purchase the 10 danger Zones so I'm happy to hear that companies have used the video's and are happy with the informaion presented.
