Part Time to Full Time

Any issues with moving a PT employee to FT status for a short, designated period of time? We don't - and he doesn't want a status change since this in only temporary.

  • If he's not benefit-eligible because of his PT status, look out for benefit eligiblity issues depending on the way your insurance contracts, etc. are written (e.g., eligible employee who works 30 hours or more per week, etc.) Other than that, I can't see any particular red flags.
  • Agree with Parabeagle. The length of time spent in a more than 30 hour per week status is usually the determining factor.
  • Ours, and other places I've worked, have 32 hour determinants as the cutoff for eligibility; but, even that must be maintained for a period of weeks, not temporarily. Be sure to check your policy to see what the wording is regarding the number of hours and whether it would have to be maintained consistently, over time, to qualify them for benefits. But, in case you're wondering, it would not affect any other labor law issue.
