Unemployment Benefits

How do employees in Georgia qualify for unemployment benefits?
Is the law any different than that in other states?

  • Alisha: A call to any local office of the Georgia Department of Employment Security will get you an employer's guide and a benefits handbook. You can also get the basic rules by visiting one of the offices. If you are in HR and there is a possibility you may have to respond to claims questionnaires or attend hearings, it would be a good thing for you to visit your nearest office and learn a bit about the processes from the office manager, the supervising interviewer and an appeals referee. All of them would be glad to help you since they also will be asking for your help with forms and facts in the future. Each state has a different set of laws regarding UI. If you get 50 responses here that describe the rules in 50 states you will be most confused. To get only your state-specific guidelines, call that office. You can also call the Workforce Investment office or the Georgia Employment Security Commission state office listed in your government pages. Another way to get in touch with the right people for this information is to ask your payroll department for the contact name and number of the people the payroll office sends its quarterly UI reports and payments to. Hope this helps.
