Forfeiting Vacation

I've noticed several articles lately about employees forfeiting vacation: concerns about how they will be evaluated, too busy, short staffed, dedicated, etc. We have 250 employees and you can count on one hand the number who forfeit any appreciable vacation (use it or lose it plan). Do your employees forfeit vacation?

  • Not in the use it or lose it manner. Our employees accrue their vaction bi-weekly. If an employee hits 240 hours, they earn no more until they get below that number.
  • We also can count on one hand those who forfeit vacation. The majority of forfeitures are hours that the employee "forgot" they had left (even though it appears on their paycheck stub each week). Our cutoff for taking vacation accrued in the previous year in the last full week in September. Managers receive a computerized notice each year before Labor Day detailing how much vacation each of their employees has left to use. The Managers inform their employees and remind them of the date by which the vacation has to be taken. Once the cutoff date has passed, the vacation is forfeited.
