Free advertising???

I had an interesting phone call this morning. Apparently one of our employees bought a used vehicle from this caller. The caller wouldn't give me his name but he wanted me to give a message to our employee telling him that if he didn't come up with the remaining $200 he was going to put a huge sign in front of his yard that reads "'so and so' owes me money and he works for (our company's name)".

Is there anything I can do or should do about him using our name on his sign? Or maybe I should look at it as free advertising??

Any thoughts?

I would ask the employee to come to my office and then tell him the message that the caller left. Period.

I would do none of the above. There's nothing one can do about another posting a true message on a sign on their own property. Maybe you could have told the caller "Add one more line to your sign....I was a fool for entering into this transaction."

Not really much different than the sign I saw recently outside a store which identified the bad check passer of the week. Thought is was hilarious. Small town so even though it did not have it, I am sure everyone knows where the person worked.

I think I'd give my employee a heads up...your name is going to be plastered on a sign in front of so and so's house. Maybe he forgot....x;-)

I pulled up behind a U-Haul truck that had been rented from Mike Smith's U-Haul with a hand lettered sign on the back that said "Mike Smith's U-haul S**ks!" I'd like to have seen Mike Smith's face when the customer returned the U-Haul after driving it all over town.
