SS# on applications?

On the initial interview app or a walk in asking for an app...at that point can we ask for their SS# or does that have to wait until the "offer" of the job interview?

  • I have always asked for SSN on the app - I don't see why you couldn't. The employee volunteers the information, would still be considered for employment if they refused to provide it (still must provide upon hire though) and it's not information that could be used for discriminatory purposes.

Also, the SSN comes in handy when doing employment verifications when the applicant comes from a huge company or has a common name.

I'm sure there are some who can provide legal reasons why you can or cannot ask. This is my opinion based on experience, not legal research. x;-)
  • Our application also has a space requesting the SSN. I know of no reason why you can't request it, and it is good to have to verify employment references, background checks, etc.
  • Okay, I'll be the contrary one here. x;-) We do not ask for SS numbers on our applications because there is no reason to capture that information prior to hire (and with all the identity theft going on we just don't want the potential exposure). We collect it after hire along with DOB so we can do the background check and make the hire conditional upon successful completion of the background check.
