Silly question

My Director just asked me to find out if there is a certification or speciality called Professional Purchasing Manager. .Ie John Doe, PPM. I can't find anything and am contending that the complaining person who said we needed to have a Professional Purchasing Manager was implying that our Purchasing Manger is not professional and/or educated enough. .Any help out there? As always, thanks in advance

There is a certification of "Certified Purchasing Manager". There is an organization now called "The Institute of Supply Management" that formerly was NAPM (National Association of Purchasing Management". I think you can still access the info by using something like NAPM.com. or some derivative of that. The designation is tested and earned through that organization. It looks good on a resume but is otherwise useless.

Within the ranks of the purchasing community it does carry some weight and, as Don says, the designation is CPM. I've only encountered CPMs in larger companies, though, where such things seem to make a difference at least in the internal pecking order.

The last place I worked had one of these dignataries. He convinced the owner to pay to get him the designation. He told me it had no value other than it's appearance on his resume. He also had a super contract which gave him a huge bonus based on his annual cost reductions. This guy selected and ordered every no. 2 pencil, roll of tissue paper (wax paper) and reel of high grade aluminum that hit the docks at the company.
