Coming back from military duty

We have an individual who has been on military leave. Actually he was called up to fill in locally for someone who went to serve in the recent war. Of course, we were required to hold his job for him until his return which could have been two years. We have heard through the grapevine that he will probably be back in six weeks. Isn't there a provision that he is supposed to let us know he is returning instead of merely showing up on our door step? I thought it was 30 days. Anyway...I don't want to run into trouble with the military, but we do need to make a staff plan to put him back into circulation.

USERRA speaks to how soon the employee has to report back to work, but I've never seen anything that speaks to giving the employer notice of his or her pending return. The link below has some great info if you need more.

If the duty is over in between 31 and 180 days, he must reapply within 14 days after being released from duty. I see nothing that indicates he is required to advise you that he is being released ahead of time, although that would be common courtesy if it's possible.
