HELP !!!! Succession Planning

I need the expertise of anyone out there who knows the best way or process to go about a succession plan. A summary of the steps to take in priority order would be greatly appreciated. Also, your input on an estimate of how long a succession plan takes, would also be helpful. This would be for an employee base of approximately 650.

I have a relatively simple process developed for Sucession Planning...it would not be done for all employees, but for key positions within the organization. I would be happy to send you the forms and the overall policy that describes the process. I like it because it does not have a lot of bells and whistles, but gets the job done. When the process is finished, we have a snapshot of which positions have likely internal replacements, the timeframe it would take to get them ready, and what the training/development needs are for each individual. Training and development needs are then analyzed for trands which pretty much shows us where our overall deficiencies are and a training matrix can be built from that information.
