Setting Departmental Objectives and Goals

We have recently been assigned the task of requesting each Department to set Departmental Objectives and Goals. We have never had to perform this function before, thus I am at a loss.

Does anyone in the forum have any outlines or suggestions you would be willing to share?

At my company we set corporate goals first. The President and Vice Presidents set the goals for the year with the approval of the Board of Directors. We meet off premises for the day and these goals are announced to the senior staff. We discuss ideas, plans and agendas. Each Unit Manager or Department Head leaves this meeting armed with the necessary information he will need to set his departments goals. As we see it, the ship and its crew are moving in one direction. There are quarterly meetings, again, off premises, to review where we are and whether we are on the right track.

As Rita notes, your goal should come first . then break down actions steps that are measurable as to how you are going to reach that goal. IE( VERY simple example) you might have a goal of 200 new referrals per year (this is a bit tough not knowing your exact mission) Anyway, I would then ask how are we going to get those referrals? Sub steps might be 1) Visit 10 community agencies in the next 6 months 2) Advertise in local paper 1x per month 3) give referal incentives etc. As Rita notes it is also important to revisit to see how you are doing. I have worked in places where Management by Objectives (might try a search on that) has worked great and really enjoyed it. Also can be one of those great ideas that no one follows thro on and is quickly gathering dust on the shelf.If it is new and no one in your company has ever done it before, I would also suggest some training. If you are going to do it right, it takes time and practice. I have not been with a company that does this for years, but if you can give a little more info. perhaps some of us can throw out some ideas.

We are involved in this process right now. I can fax you some great info from SHRM about developing mission, SWOT analysis, long term goals, short term goals and measures if you like. It may be too detailed for what you are doing, but I'm sure bits and pieces will help. When we did this, we started off with a survey to our (HR's) customers to find out where we were good and where we needed help. Then we (HR) had a meeting to work on mission, SWOT, etc and see what we can really do based on our resources. Of course all our objectives are focused around our company's goals. Next we are going to include one key person from each plant (we have 8 locations) to make sure what we think we should do matches their expectations. Make sure you get input from as many ppl as possible. I would not walk into a meeting room and say these are your objectives. Without involvement you will not be as effective as you could be. I could go on and on but I'll stop. If you want to talk further let me know.

Charleston is great, I love it too. Did not beat my goal in the race, but it is very crowded and it is hard to get a good pace when you are in the middle of the pack. There are approx 30,000 runners, so it gets a bit crowded.
