Weekend Overtime

We have an employee who has been with us for 13 months. At hire, she was informed that there would be overtime on the weekends. She agreed, in writing, that she would be able to work that overtime. Since mid-January, she has been scheduled, but not reported for weekend work. She says that she can no longer get a sitter for her children. We have begun the verbal, written, etc., progressive disciplinary process for the attendance issue.

While I have a particular feeling for accommodating single parents, if we change her schedule to work only during the week, other employees map opt for equal treatment. She has gotten rather emotional since the progressive discipline process has begun. Soon she will reach the suspension stage. Any thoughts? I hate to dismiss her, but...........

  • you have to treat her the same you would any other employee...regardless of her single parent status. You are on the right track by starting the progressive discipline and keep it going no matter how much it hurts her or you. Other employees will be very upset if you give her special treatment.
