remote employees

we have a few employees who work out of their homes and are in different states than our main office. They have company computers and tools. With that said, my question is how would we handle firing an employee who works out of their home? Has anyone had to do this? Do you meet them at a resturaunt? Do it in their home? I'm just trying to get some ideas...thanks!

  • In the past three years, we have had occasion to part ways with probably 4 salespeople who are stationed 'remotely' in other states, working as it were, out of their house and our car, if at all. With each parting of the ways, an email, telephone call and registered letter were sent stating our decision. And the letter was not out of the blue. We always employ the correct processes of trying to work with employees, counsel them, discipline them and advise them of our expectations and how close they are coming to violating those expectations. So, none of them are surprised when the hammer finally falls. The letter also listed each item of company property still in their possession along with instructions for their return by placing them in the trunk of our vehicle, which we would arrange to have picked up by common carrier and delivered back to corporate. We operate on the assumption that these individuals still consider themselves professionals and that they would be seeking other employment, and that they perhaps gave some consideration to what our remarks might be during employment verification calls that might come. Works for us.
