Rehire Retired Employee

We are considering hiring a former employee that is retired on a part time basis. Are we required to provide benefits, i.e. retirement, sick leave, vacation, etc. for this person if employed less than 1000 hrs per year? Are there any other legal issues that may apply in this case?

You'll be required to offer this person the same benefits that are offered to all other employees in that same classification. You didn't mention whether this person is a pensioner of your company. If so, your retirement plan probably has provisions for re-hiring vested term's or pensioners, so be mindful of that issue.
