Reason for Termination

Does anyone know if IL law requires an ER to provide a terminated EE a termination reason in writing? I know that here in MN, we must provide one if the EE requests it, in writing, within 15 working days of termination. I am not having much luck with the IL DOL, so any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

There is no requirement for this in Illinois.

My 2-cents------- I personally subscribe to the theory that people are entitled to know the reasons for their de-employment. We tell them at the time of their departure, but are reluctant to put it in writing (for legal reasons), however, the truth is your best defense and in my experience will serve you better than dancing around the reason and enabling the former employee to manufacture a reason. I know you'll find strong opinions on this topic, but that's mine!

Even though we are an employment at will state, we tell people the reason for their termination, even if it's "it is just not working out - you are not a good match for our organization."

I never put a reason for termination in writing. This is not required for unemployment in our state; I feel they are fishing for an attorney to try to take their case (for whatever reason they might have in their mind).

Thanks for the info, it is exactly our feeling that a couple of individuals are "fishing" for ammo to use in a suit of some kind.
