Verbal Resignation

An employee gave a verbal resignation yesterday to his supervisor and left the building (i.e., no advance notice). Before he left, his supervisor asked him to please give us something in writing. How long must we wait (if at all) before we can post the position? We have very low turnover within our organization and this is a first for us. Thank you.

Have the manager write you a memo stating the facts as you outline them, put a copy in the employee's file and refill the position. If the employee returns wishing to take back the resignation, you are perfectly within you rights to say that you've already accepted it, especially if the employee left the premises.

Margaret's right! And the employee QUIT, job abandonment, she didn't resign. Be sure to carry that memo with you to the UI Appeal.
