Labor relations--creative flexibility agreements?

Has anyone got any creative agreements they've made with their unions that allows increased flexibility in terms of assignments between positions in the bargaining unit and especially between bargaining unit and non-bargaining unit employees? We have an office and technical union and the inflexibility is threatening to grind our administrative efforts to a halt.

  • All of our creative agreements have met refusal from the union. They tend not to budge except at negotiating time, unless its to their clear advantage, not the company's. The union will have little or no interest in your administrative successes unless it relates directly to their comfort level or compensation. A bargaining chip at negotiating time is about the best you can hope for unless the change is entirely neutral or clearly advantageous to their leadership.
