access to reference info

Scenario: An Oregon employer voluntarily provides education, employment and criminal check information that was obtained to its new hires. What issues should they consider as they do this? What do they legally have to provide; what should be kept completely confidential?

  • Jamie: I don't know about Oregon. In MS its certainly not required and I've never heard of it being done. I don't see any really positive outcomes of providing it. It might give an employee a warm feeling to know somebody spoke well of them, but, what about all those things I can pull out of people in a reference check that the ee has no business knowing or seeing?
