Working July 4th???

Our employees have requested to work July 4th and take off July 5th for a 3 day weekend. Is there a law that covers this? They won't be working over 40 hours and it does not affect our company in any way. Thanks.

  • There is no law that says that a company has to grant holidays. Some companies (such as hospitals and hotels) have to require employees to work the "traditional" holidays such as July 4th. If your company wants to take the 5th off instead of the 4th that's your call.
  • One thing you might want to check, before you agree to this, is your company policy regarding "holiday pay". working on the 4th may entitle the employees to premium pay (which you may not want to be on the hook for).

Also, some states may require premium pay for holiday work (Texas does not to my knowledge, but I would not be surprized if California or some other states do).

    Good Luck!
