Furlough

HELP!!! The State has just notified us that our budget is being cut for the third time this year. We've had time to address the earlier two cuts, but this third cut comes at our fiscal year end. In just three weeks we must produce a balanced budget. We're looking at a furlough (mandatory leave without pay). Does anyone know the best way to approach this? How are retirement and other benefits affected? Legal pitfalls we should be aware of? Any help you could give ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

I'd ask the agency director. In our state such things are covered in detail in policy manuals that apply to each and every division of state government. If your people are paying into the state's retirement system, they could handle those questions that relate to those monies. Any arm of government that has the power to mandate a furlough surely has mechanisms in place to manage such a process. In the absence of all else, call the Governor's hotline.
