Employee Garnishment Notification

When you receive a garnishment notification, do you notify the employee? See if they know anything about it? Or do you just start garnishing wages and wait to see if the employee sees it on her paycheck?

I used to work for a law firm who filed garnishments for third parties and I cannot remember if we sent notification to the employee or if their employer informed them.

Although the employee should know that the garnishment is coming, it is our practice to send the employee notification. My experience has been that sometimes they don't know exactly when the garnishment will begin or how much it will be. We always include those two things in a confidential letter to them.

Give the employee a copy of the notice - it sometimes happens that the notice is in error or for the wrong amount . You want to give the employee every legal chance to straighten the matter out.
