Benefit eligibility with increased summer hours

Wondering if anyone knows if you have an employee who works 20-29 (considered part time w/out any benefits) hours a week, can they work over 30 hours(ee's receive benefits at 30+ hours) just during the summer. They will return to their normal hours in the fall. Do you run into having to give them benefits or can we have them sign an agreement saying they will work 30+ hours with out any benefits.

  • My thought is, it depends on your published definition of full time. Ours is "thirty or more hours per week on a consistent basis". We define a consistent basis as intended to last indefinitely, not subject to periodic or seasonal increases and decreases in hours. Our policy also addresses Jobs and assignments that may from time to time have increased hours according to seasonal scheduling and these are periodic and not considered full time for benefits purposes. I'm anxious to see other answers to this one myself.
