Conflict of interest

A conditional job offer is extended to an employee. During the pre-employment process, employee mentions that he/she will also work for the local police department. Your business deals with patient healthcare and confidentiality. Question: Can you refuse to hire the policeman based on conflict of interest because he/she will access to patient information that could be used on his job as a policeman?

  • I would not overlook a qualified candidate solely based on his other employment in law enforcement. Seems to me that he's informed about your confidentiality policy exactly as all other staff and you let him do the job for you. If he violates your policy, then you address it just as you should anyone else. Rejecting his candidacy based on your scenario seems "goofy" cuz it's motivated on "what if".......
