New Hire - Exempt employee

My company recently hired a new manager. He started on a Friday and worked Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Do we have to pay him his full week's salary for his first week even though he was not technically an employee until Friday?

How important is this new hire? We really strive to make our exempt managers feel "exempt". You know, not an employee-- but an extension of the company. Sometimes they work over, sometimes they work under...but it is a mindset. Anyway, for our important folks we just pay the full first week and would chalk up the extra two days as a good investment in making a good first impression to the new employee on just how much he means to us.
