Unsupported I-9

We had to terminate someone today for failure to produce supporting documentation for the I-9. Employee was very cordial, but continually made excuses for not being able to produce any of the required documentation. The Social Security Admin verified the name, number, and date of birth.

Any idea what could be going on? Are we required to report this to INS?

  • Something fishy was going on. Maybe he was doing something illegal (illegal alien or assumed someone else's identity). Or maybe his personal life is so fouled up that he couldn't produce these basic documents (on drugs or homeless).

You don't know what it is, so I don't see that you have anything to report. Unless there's some INS regulation I never heard of (which wouldn't be too surprising).
