We err on the side of caution, and do not send termination letters. If an employee specifically asks for one, we state that we can only provide a letter stating dates of employment and whether the termination was voluntary or involuntary.

Love it, Nae. I'm thinking about putting a copy of it in our performance management tools website.....

There's an article in this month's SHRM "HR Magazine" about this very topic - I just ran across it today. It suggests some companies...perhaps someone has experience with one of them? If not, Paul, I guess you could check them out. QQuest Corp. R…

W.O.W. You win.

Frank, you don't have any extra time on your hands, do you?

We have about 160 FMLA-eligible employees, and we do ours the old fashioned way. By hand. Bless you, Outlook & Excel!!!
-
I would also, like Nae, start with the paperwork. See what the physician's certification has to say. We currently have 2 employees on FMLA for this very issue....I DEFINITELY feel your pain on this one...it's been a nightmare.

(f) Records relevant to any other pending claim between the employer and employee which may be discovered in a judicial proceeding. Would that include EEOC claims? They aren't "technically" judicial proceedings.

I, also, will admit to reading the books and liking them. But shhhhh. Don't tell anyone

Here's what a "habitual offenders" policy built into our PTO policy. An excerpt is below - private message me if you want the whole shebang. Habitual Offenders Any of the following occurrences will be considered one “offense” (except where otherwi…

While we don't have a diversity program at our company, per se, we do a pretty good job in my opinion. It doesn't hurt that we are in the 3rd largest metropolitan area in the US, or that our company has a wide array of job positions, but I have see…

Thanks, Nae - the job description was included, so I guess I'm out of options!

Whether there's a "gene" or not, it doesn't make it right or acceptable behavior from anyone. Some scientists believe psychopaths also have a genetic pre-disposition to their "indescretions." Does that make it OK? If so, I guess a psychopath's in…

In response to a question on our application: "I have almost 10 years of experience. I will bring a background in management. I am very detial orienated [sic]."

Welcome to the forum, aheisler! Here are some things to think about.... 1. Are you going to regulate everything your employees do on their own time, such as during unpaid meal breaks? 2. There are court cases of employers who are successful in…

Very true - but could you really call it a BFOQ???

So I guess in this case, there really are no "Strawberry Fields Forever...." Yes, I know it's a bad joke. No, I don't care. Happy Friday! ::pb&J::

Yesssssssssssss!!!! We've had some great haikus on this forum....

All I have to say is kudos on the 8% increase - I would kill for that! We were hit with 16% last year, industry standard was 12%. I'm anticipating 12-14% next year (January renewal).

I wonder what the CEO thinks about this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37318331/?gt1=43001

We used to do the typical Annual Review. Like Paul said, many people (including myself) hate reviews - employees tend to focus on the one negative thing you say instead of the positives, and their notion of success or failure rests on that review. …

Nae, I completely argee with you. That article was great. Learn some self-control, men!!!! Women do it all the time - that's why our homicide rate is so low

To me, a broker is an extension of my department. Therefore, I look for things that are going to make my job easier and allow the broker to do the job well. Some things I usually consider are: --Average client size (Do they often work with groups…

Aaaaaaand....another one.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37192342/from/ET?gt1=43001

We gave out all the necessary paperwork, of course. An exec at the company wanted to wait until we had a clearer picture from the employee, but I explained it was a bad idea. I have a feeling we might need to go the second opinion route with her t…
Geez, there is a cautionary tale. I wonder if the firing boss had any qualms about firing, or googling employees to see what is out there.
It's definitely a tough situation - a few months ago, we terminated an employe…

Not a fun situation!!! We address this sort of situation on the front end of employment. We have both a confidentiality & a conflict of interest policy which all employees much sign off on upon hire. For conflicts of interest, they have to di…
Hello All We are getting ready to implement an electronic timekeeping system through our payroll provider ADP. Interestingly enough the system gives employers the "option" of an "Approval" step. According to the time and la…

We handle this sort of situation with a Scheduling Agreement between the employee and the company. This agreement more or less replaces the section of our handbook defining work hours. We've found it to be pretty useful.

I agree, Nae - we'd call that insubordination.
