WOW. If it weren't for bad luck..... I will take a stab at this. The candidate is unavailable to work and not available to fulfill the pre-employment screening that is required as a condition of employment. I would advise the candidate that, reg…

We frown on employees circulating "petitions" concerning what they feel might be unfair treatment, etc. They are encouraged to speak with their supervisors or to come to Human Resources if they don't feel comfortable talking with the supervisor or …

I can't see any reason at all where these individuals would have any right to know what salaries of employees are. They claim their fees entitle them to this information. Does the fact that they pay fees to an electric or gas company entitle them …

I agree with you guys. Sometimes when we try to be compassionate with long term employees whose performance has started to fail, we end up getting "bit in the butt", especially if there is a possibility of getting a nice "retirement windfall".

I have always thought the exemption was based on duties and responsibilities of the position - not necessarily the degree. Our CEO does not have a four year degree - does this mean he is not an exempt individual? He runs a multi-million dollar cor…

WELL SAID, DON. AMEN!!!!

Dasher - I am glad to hear you say that you would also ban other items that might be considered "offensive" other than the Confederate flag. Being from the South...some consider this symbol racist...some do not...it is their personal perception of …

We don't allow employees to bring children to work with them. We would soon look like a nursery if we allowed this - not to mention the distraction it would cause.

Two issues here. I hate having to deal with employees wearing shorts to work. They do not look good on a lot of people and I prefer kakhis and polo shirts (but that's just my uptight, conservative opinion). If this is, indeed, your dress code, yo…

Hey Don: The weirdest thing I have heard about our DOL in South Carolina is they have caller ID on their phone system so you can't ask just a simple anonymous question without maybe triggering something in your own organization for them to investig…

In hindsight (which is always 20/20), these types of holidays that don't typically apply to the "majority", or have religious overtones, should probably be counted under the umbrella of "floating holidays". Jewish Holidays, Good Friday, Confederate…

We don't allow them - it's a nest of nightmares!

I would agree with Gillian. He can't perform the essential functions of the job and he does not qualify for FMLA. I would just invite him to re-apply for any available positions when he gets over his disability.

Yep, there is a problem. If exempt individuals work any part of a work week, they must be paid for the entire week. Otherwise they lose their exempt status and become an hourly employee.

We are very generous with our PTO policy and on the front end at orientation we encourage employees to "bank up" at least two weeks in case of emergencies. We expect them to manage their PTO responsibly just as they do their bank accounts. If an e…

We have scheduled and unscheduled. Employees are required to fill out a proper request for leave form and have it approved by supervisor in advance. Everything else is unscheduled (unless as per the ones Don stated). Employees are given 3 "free" …

The cost is enormous and the liability great. Check with your state licensing requirements for a day care and you may back off pretty quickly. It sounds simple, but your have great responsibility when you are dealing with other peoples' children. …

WE don't allow anyone but senior managers to have company credit cards. If they are not trustworthy, we never should have hired them in the first place. Everyone who works for us has to pass a pretty stringent background check, but we don't run a c…

We basically follow the same format as Margaret has suggested. We hand out an acknowledgement at orientation and have employees sign that they are aware that the handbook is "on line" and it is their responsibility to read and understand what is co…

NOOOOOOOO. I don't think you would ever get an employee to turn in a shirt they purchased! I'm glad you furnish at least two, but if they wash one every day, they will look tattered pretty quickly. Do you get many takers on buying the old "turn…

DJ is not short for Don, Jr. is it?

This is way too nightmarish to keep up with. If this is an hourly person, it is very difficult to accurately track their hours. With your excellent benefit package, it's hard to understand why anyone undergoing chemo would actually want to or feel…

Oh...forgot to tell you...we run them through a scanner before we bring them in for termination to make sure there are no hidden weapons.

We have tried several ways and have found it's best to do it late in the day on Friday. In our organization, we have done it earlier in the day and the departing employee goes downstairs and puts "on a show" in front of employees and others causing …

I have to tell you guys a funny story. I love animals and have two Yorkies that are my "children". But...I realize not everyone loves dogs just as not everyone loves children. Anyway...we had a doc in one of our small offices who was bringing his…

I guess you can equate this the same as parents thinking their children are all little angels when they are actually holy terrors.

If your main concern is turnover, I would not hire counselors, teachers, computer techs, etc. for an entry level teller job. These folks obviously cannot find jobs and are looking for "a job". Having worked in financial institutions before, there …

We file in the personnel files. Can't really see any reason not to. There are enough other files we have to keep up with rather than making yet another one!

Sorry, I was unclear. A supervisor would have a "need to know", but it appears that just someone sitting on a council might not have this "need" (unless they happened to be that person's supervisor). Sorry for the confusion!
-
I would only let someone see another person's file on a "need to know" basis. If there is not a legitimate reason to view someone's records, then you certainly should deny this request. Sounds like it may just be a case of curiosity.
