A week per year of service is generally the accepted norm.

If I am following this correctly, it appears that the wrong person was "disciplined", transferred, etc. or whatever you want to call it. The supervisor who assaulted the employee should have been the one moved to another area or department. The …

Generally, I have found, that when employees leave and then want to return, the reasons they left initially are still there. It appears this is the case with your person. I would not even consider a rehire until he had made the committment and mov…

We are just starting to explore the possibility of scanning at least the resigned employee personnel files. This is almost a "must" for us as we are running out of storage space and the off site space that we have is costing a bundle. I don't kn…

Since this was from a "concerned employee" and not a customer, I would simply ignore it since it is not true. The owner of the letter obviously wants to start something and the more you sensationalize it, the more thrill they will get out of it. J…

I can tell you there is no such "law" or "ruling" that would require an employer to pay for kennel costs. As someone else said, employees do not expect child care to be paid by the employer, so consequently boarding costs would not be covered. Hav…

JoAnn: I am sure that you have learned a valuable lesson on being too "paternalistic" in the workplace. It's a great atmosphere when people are treated as family and everyone gets along...but...as in most families...there is a maverick that wants t…

I've learned over the years if you truly want to keep something in the workplace private, tell NO ONE! Your coworker should have referred your boss back to you for any info that he wanted on your "condition". Since this is already out, I would…

I would take this for what it was - an emotional response to devastating news and the first inclination for some folks is to do just what your receptionist did - ask for prayers...that's evidently part of her faith. Since this is your employee, I w…

Sad Situation Hunter. We are struggling now with a very unstable employee who is going to run out of FMLA soon and will not be able to perform her job due to psychological problems. We have this same concern that she will do something to herself. …

I would ask for a letter of resignation from this employee so that you can proceed with recruitment.
-
NO,you don't. He is an ex-employee and therefore not entitled to anything in his file.

As I tell any parent, spouse, or any other person who calls "on behalf of an employee"....."sorry, due to privacy issues, I cannot discuss anything of this nature with you." Sounds like you handled the situation in an appropriate manner. I don't…

Mwild: You are absolutely correct about salary.com information. I have lots of employees present this information to me as "gospel". I, too, wish I made the salary that is quoted for my years of experience.

I would analyze your market and your ability as a company to pay. If the market states the salary is low, then I would make a market adjustment to the salary. If you can't afford the entire $8,000, then maybe you can counter with at least half of …

I guess I have a real problem with the fact that the doctor's office even discussed a patient with the employer. The other issue is I have never heard of a physician giving "pre-authorized" excuses to be away from work, especially if the patient ha…

I agree. I would not hire a custodian who has free access to the building. We have had a lot of thefts in our practice that are traced to after hours. We have actually caught a couple of them rifling through employees desk drawers, etc.
-
We also have a three day, no-call no show policy. Sounds to me like the employee just called and "told" the supervisor what she was going to do rather than going through proper channels. If you have a policy in place that this needs to be approved…

I'd never call something like this "mother's hours". I'd call it flex, part or whatever, but make sure it is open to anyone. Males and/or those who don't have children will be up in arms if special treatment is given only to "mothers".

Hey Craig: I am currently Director of Human Resources in a large cardiology practice (27 docs). I have previously worked in two hospital environments. Tstevens was exactly correct in what you will be facing in healthcare. Another thing I have fa…

Years ago, I worked in a financial institution and I can tell you that all employees in the bank were held to a much higher level of financial responsibility than other organizations where I have worked. A credit report was run on every final candi…

We did require this, but, as you said, a lot of them couldn't find them. We also put at the bottom of the first page of the updated handbook the revision date and "This version of handbook supercedes any previous versions". Just a little added CYA…

We have had our Employee Handbook on our Intranet for a couple of years now and it's great. We notify employees of the changes via the Webpage as well as a synopsis with their paycheck stubs (that each employee receives). We also go over this in N…

Reading between the lines, it appears that you may be self-insured and came by this information through EOBs, etc. If this is the case, you probably are already strongly bound by HIPAA regulations as far as confidentiality of information is concern…

I guess I'm a little confused. Was this person interviewing for a job and he was unwilling to come in on a Saturday for an interview? If I am reading this correctly, then what happens if he is hired as an attorney and court convenes on a Saturday?…

We do have a policy about Pets in the Workplace as well as one about Children In the Workplace. If you would give me your fax or email address,I would be happy to send to you. Rockie

Just another aside. It's real difficult to form these close type of relationships at work being in HR because you never know when you may have to do something like this.

Beagle: I agree with Ray. I believe once you talk with this individual, you will find that she will not be surprised at this outcome. Anyone who has been in the business arena as long as she has would certainly understand that the company could n…

I agree with Don on this. Most law enforcement will tell you the same thing - there is no such thing as rehabilitation for these folks. I'm not sure what "retribution for his wife" means. Does this mean that he was angry at his wife and went out a…
