• IMHO, a trip from CA to FL would be extremely beneficial to all HR personnel regardless of the quality or content of the conference. ;;) Seriously, I was also curious if to see such a conference would provide efficient methods for producing measu…
• Exactly what are they wearing? Fatigues, army green tank tops under the jackets, camouflauge, full dress suits (or pieces thereof) with pins, ribbons, etc.? I understand your concern about wanting to be a patriotic company albeit with everyone wea…

• I've instituted a policy with two different employers over the years when starting new jobs. I-9 document copies are NOT filed with I-9's, and the I-9's must be filled out COMPLETELY, with "N/A"'s so there are no blank spaces. Copies of any docume…
• We don't do background checks on current employees, but I've done so in the past with other employers usually as a condition of a promotion or transfer. Is there a problem with the current employees and that's why the committee wants to check on th…
• I think you need to use the same system for all employees with the same circumstances, esp. considering years of service. Off the top of my head, a suspension might give you a rest from her antics. I hope they haven't given her any raises recently…
• I have spoken to her many times but she just doesn't get it. And a VP who doesn't get it is even scarier! She's not sulking too badly now. She gave me a card and a $20 gift cert for bosses day. But her job is hanging by a thread. IMHO, one writ…
• We track both half-day and whole-day absences so their PTO gets docked fairly for all concerned.
• Regarding the serving of legal docs - you might want to remind the receptionist, whatever HE/SHE signs for, they could be held personally responsible for ensuring that the order is carried out. We have several companies in our building and it ama…

• Tsk tsk tsk. The only websites I've found include some very inappropriate humor and you have to wade through them to find what suits your workplace.
• If the emails are well written, sincere and thoughtful, it might go over well in a high tech company. Short of that, I'd stick with paper cards (or calendars and donations! th-up ) with handwritten notes/signatures on the inside. I enjoy seeing th…
• Our company has a tradition of direct reports going in on a Xmas gift for their supervisor and I've never heard any complaints about this. The baby showers are another story...
• We have a service that does background checks on all our new hires and we have to approve an extra $10-$15 fee for this at least once or twice a week. It seems the very large employers tend to have this arrangement, but some smaller ones do too. T…
• Regardless of whether we are lawyers, doctors, sailors, HR professionals, etc., sometimes we all need to laugh at ourselves. It was a piece of "fluff" that made me curious and venture into this forum many moons ago.
• In case this helps, just brainstorming, you might compose a letter from the president for "all employees concerned about their ability to continue employment in the US" to be included in paychecks with contact info for a confidential company attorne…
• Do you have a written policy regarding substance abuse, reporting to work under the influence, possession of intoxicants in the workplace, etc.?
• Is this person's job position exempt or nonexempt from overtime?
• Yes, a search is very wise. For starters, it could be asthma...ADA...
• I get this question constantly in my workplace in an effort to avoid time and a half and merely pay straight time. 8-| IF you want to get into salaried nonexempt positions where OT is added to a fixed weekly rate as half time, do a search (for "sa…

• Good questions! I've just started to scan things to get rid of my enormous paper trail in a growing company, but when it comes to some documents I'm concerned. I hope someone has some guidelines. Thx.
• LAST EDITED ON 07-21-06 AT 03:05PM (CST)[br][br]I'm puzzled here. If the employee's husband got out of jail a few years ago but the charges were just in the newspaper recently, those must be new charges against…

• Greetings and welcome! Does this employee have a handicapped parking tag on her vehicle?
• I agree with HRinGA. It's been one of those days.

• We have salaried nonexempt payroll. Believe me, calculating their weekly overtime is a timeconsuming nightmare and you don't want to go there if you don't have to. Our boss instigated salaried nonexempt after a DOL auditor said he could. It is no…
• We didn't terminate him. We gave him some time off to take care of the warrant and he can return to work as soon as he does. I don't think it matters if it was a driving violation or not. I believe our ethics policy would be violated if we allowe…
• I would have asked him to take care of the bench warrant and then come to work. Perhaps that is what we should do now?
• I agree it's not legal to take them below minimum wage. On the employer's side, they probably have had a more than a few employees who "look the other way" when their friends drive off with a full tank they didn't pay for.

• The employee would have to sign for the payroll deduction(s) - perhaps the company does not deduct the full amount? All of the gas stations around here have pumps that require payment before the gas can be pumped.
