• joannie: It is assumed he/she is from outside the company. Otherwise your phone call would fall under 5511 or 6238. If you prefer for the company to provide you with one, please put your request in the Suggestion Box. Just beware that someone ma…

• I miss allsteaks, though I hear from him frequently through SHRM. His insights were a great addition here. He has started a consulting firm with a partner and has no time for us poor hired folks.

• She can wait until her mom sees a doctor and completes the form, or she can leave her employment. If you don't stand by reasonable rules you soon have anarchy.
• Hey! I resemble that remark!

• This last year I redid our reviews. I basically modified the JDs by dividing them up into segments of similar duties/requirements and then asking for two things. 1) Current Performance (knowledge, skill set, accuracy, follow instructions/procedures…
• Here is what I have observed in the past: If the higher management staff (president, etc) is slow to do appraisals for lower management staff and supervisors (department or shift level), the lower staff will do the same. Crud creeps downward. If…
• Thank you Paul and cngr! This is what I needed to move forward.
• Welcome to the forum brybol! I think your state laws may play into this. But if you pay out at 100%, make sure there is no discrimination and give employees plenty of warning you should be ok. Here we are not required to pay out all leave, and un…
• I wish brybol! But if I want to change her odor it needs to be something she is eating, for she has no bathing issues or related body odor. The complaints concern both her frequent odors AND her um..rude noises. Do you think I really need to addr…
• The word usage one can drive you crazy. One of mine is advice and advise. You give someone advice (noun) and you advise (verb) someone. Many people use advise when they mean advice. One that I sometimes use that drives others crazy is irregardle…
• You can change your policies and protect yourself against prior precedents as long as you give plenty of warning and communicate it clearly. It is too late for this employee or any other on leave right now. You might even have issues if another em…
• Ahhh...there's the rub. The employee has never indicated any health condition might cause odor issues. Hygiene is addressed in the policy, and so has the use of perfumes and sprays. This employee is highly alergic to certain chemicals so we have …
• Your first post! Welcome to the forum! :welcome: Currently our policy is exempt employees are charged 8 hours from their PTO bank when they take a full day off, and nothing when they take a partial day. Exempt employees are paid for a job, not th…
• Mrs: It sounds like your FMLA is based on calendar years rather than revolving methods like looking forward or looking backward. I highly suggest you change your policy so you don't run into 24 weeks off in a row again. 12 weeks should be plenty …
• I stole this and posted it on fb. Thanks for sharing!
• You need to discuss this with your supervisors. Sometimes having someone come in and talk about professional attire works best, and sometimes it is just having a small meeting. If all your supervisors are there, then everyone is on the same page. …
• Thanks, Coffee!
• There is no law that says you can't call them. As far as I know, the only law involved might be the FSLA. You only have to worry about the FSLA (compensating the employee) if the phone call is more than a few minutes (as Frank said.)
• Topping my list would be current challenges in (HR) law, and the affect of the healthcare law on employers and employees.
• I agree with Frank on this with one exception. People who habitually forget are not taking your authority seriously. I would call that insubordination too.
• Just post it. We will probably get few questions, if any.
• I googled 'Paul in Cannon Beach' and it said something about you being a Twit. \:D/
•
Does anyone have any authority for the propositions that doing something without the permission of one's supervisor or failing to follow the direction of a supervisor constitutes insubordination? Thank you.
World Englis…
• Usually the employee just wants to get a complaint off their chest, but if they want action, then I want details. After listening to the complaing, the first thing I always ask Employee A is what will Employee's B position be. Forcing them to thin…
• There are HIPAA guidelines that apply when you scan/email protected information. It has to meet a certain level of security. The level is not exactly clear in the regs, but most agree that you should have some sort of secure system in place before …
• Cool idea! I stole your link and tweeted it.
• Utilmately all questions will be illegal, as will seeing or talking to your applicant before you hire them in case it causes some form of illegal discrimination. I see big job growth in the future for psychics.
• I saw a newscast the other night where they interviewed a representative of a Police Department (in uniform) of a city in Wisconsin. He claimed it was necessary to look at applicant's FB pages as part of the background check. He said they needed t…
• Generally when I attend a HR conference there are many more women than men. However, I have recently noticed more men taking volunteer leadership roles, and more men attending conferences. I suspect the former resulted in the latter.
• I can understand why an applicant might get a negative point for being unemployed for more than 6 months in the IT arena IF I am sure they have not kept current in their field. That and medicine are two areas where you absolutely must keep current …
