This post is timely because I just got back from our 3rd annual Kansas SHRM Legislative Conference. The Kansas Council decided it start it after so many of our members worked hard to get a paycard law passed here in Kansas. I was able to watch mem…

I recently read an article where the plan was set up to reward those who stuck with the plan, whether their health numbers or weight improved or not. The participants were required to report information, but there was no penalty for the information…

Read Margaret's book last night. It's not a long read, especially if you don't have any distractions. Her no-excuses approach lays out the bald facts and makes you think. I enjoyed it, though I had heard some of it before at one of her seminars (…

Short pants or tight pants, they just have to be wearing them.

Oh yes! We require proof of insurance, a 'Can you drive in the street with your bike?' test, and finally, all drivers are required to wear pants. Good thing none of your followers works for us, huh?

We just keep a pink and purple tricyle out back. Those who want to use it have to get my permission and show my their bicyle license first.

The problem with such a tv show is that you really don't know what else happened. You just see what the producers choose for you to see so they can sell their program and make it a success. I only saw the end of the program, but it seemed to me th…

I think the key word here is 'required.' Employees who have to work 32 hours to get 8 hours off might resent employees who only work 30 hours to get 10 hours off. And if you use an accrual system for your holiday pay, giving 4 day workweek employe…

Just out of curiosity - what would you do if the IRS dropped the rate mid-year? If you don't adjust then you have to record the difference as taxable income, which would be a serious pain in the er..fanny. Of course, that situation is extremely un…

Joannie: do your employees give you er..that is, do they become disagreeable on that rare occassion when the IRS decides mid-year to increase the rate? Or do you also make an exception and increase the rate?

A lot of this is pretty much up to you. In example 1, the mileage between locations (but not to and from work at the beginning and end of the day) are considered reimbursable by the IRS. You can reimburse the employee and then claim it as a busine…

Too late.

Wow! I am thrilled and speechless! Paul: you dork.

I think if you just keep a log where you record what documents were mailed and when you will be ok. That seems to have worked in several COBRA court cases, so I imagine it would work for FMLA too. Just DONT forget to log before mailing!

Would it work?

I LOVE Margaret Morford. I tried so hard to win one of her books when she was here in September. Have you seen her talk on having the heart of a lion? It's great. She really knows how to give you insights while making it fun and memorable.

It's snowing. Temps a few days ago were up to 50, so we came close to melting all the snow we had from before. Average annual snowfall here is 20.7 inches with less that 1/3 of that coming before 12/31. This year we passed 21 inches within days o…

Looks to me like you've been visiting Hawaii or one of the Pacific islands.

Now see? My thought when I first starting reading your post was, "Why does he want to learn how to be a contortionist?" Glad you clarified. ::pb&J::

My understanding is that not returning from FMLA is a voluntary termination UNLESS the employee cannot come back for their own health reasons. In that case, the employer has the right to extend leave or to terminate. If they terminate, the employe…

You also might start a program for innovation. Let your employees know what you want and where you are headed, and see where it goes. You can add it to your next meeting agenda, or even hold a separate employee meeting to talk about creativity, in…

TK: do you really want to recomment JP's blog today? Seriously? Any succession plan has to be flexible (and much better communicated than NBC does). I can't imagine how morale would slip if every employee knew that when we decide they have given…
I could never figure out what sneezing had to do with God Bless You.
It has long been believed that your heart stops and you are close to death when you sneeze. I read it somewhere that this is why people say, "God ble…

It depends on how vague or specific the 'rumors' are. Is an employee telling you that another employee is doing this, or are the rumors vague? If it is specific information, I think you need to investigate. If really vague, then I would communica…

I am a bit confused. Is your question about whether or not the LTD amount should be included in the 401k amount, or something else? If it is the LTD amount and 401k, then you need to go back to your plan document. Our plan document states W2 wage…

TK: It looks like you might get a stronger reaction with the Brett poll.

I think you will need to give a little more information. What type of work, how often are they called, how long does a typical call last, etc.

I thought the forum was down for a day or so and was surprised to see so many unread threads when I finally got on this morning (and not on my first try). Methinks somethink stinketh in Denmark..or Tennesseethk

Even if you don't watch Law and Order I can't understand leaving your door unlocked ALL the time (as the article said 'lock people' would.) True, a determined person will get into your home no matter how much you lock it up, etc. However, most cro…
