I think the employee' s age is irrelevant -- it comes down to whether the person is able to do the job. Which, as other posters have mentioned, is about performance. I wouldn't make this an age issue, but a performance issue. Good luck! Cheryl

Paul, I tried to e-mail you but got the message your e-mail account is inactive. Would like to know more about this product. Cheryl

I have had my SPHR for several years and never regretted getting it. I think if you look at job postings, if any certification is required it will usually be PHR or SPHR. The other certifications seem to be more specific -- such as training, compe…

My last purchase of harassment training material was from Quality Media Resources of Bellevue WA -- telephone 800-800-5129; website www.qmr.com I purchased two modules -- one for supervisors and one for employees. It is called Patterns.…

Glad to hear it all went well. Hooray!

Ditto to HRQ. Whenever I have had to have this conversation, it goes something like this.....What you do on your time is your business, but when your personal relationships begin interfering with work, they become our business. I then tell them th…

I'm not sure what the purpose of this accommodation request would be or how it relates to "partial loss of vision in one eye. " I hope the employee provided you much more information in the request and that it was in writing. For information on ac…

I too would not check references without an application for a current opening, plus an authorization to do background checks.

We are a bank and keep our files seven years past separation. SD has no state laws on retention, so we go by the feds.

One thing we do for employees and their families who have been hit with a medical problem is take in food -- we set up a spreadsheet that the entire bank can get to and different "teams" of folks sign up to either take in a meal or provide gift cert…

FLSA provides specific guidance on how to handle such situations. It is complicated and we have made the decision not to allow employees to have two different jobs with our company. Good luck.

I'm late on this one -- been gone. How about a question like this-- Tell me about the last two personal conversations you initiated in the workplace. Whom did you talk to and what did you divulge? MMMMM -- maybe that's going too far?

We have some definitions that we have developed for setting our grade levels. In terms of comparing our grades to salary data, I compare our midpoint to market (average salary or 50th percentile). Our grade level spread is similar to yours -- comp…

We considered identity theft coverage for our EE's but decided against it. We are a bank and have had good luck using our state Attorney General's office for training. Just last week the AG himself did a presentation to our staff. One of the bene…

I would send her a letter stating she is no longer eligible for consideration for employment. Something like, "Dear..... We have received your application/resume' for our opening for (TITLE). I am writing to inform you that you are no longer el…

We are a bank -- we have two choices, suits or our corporate logowear with docker-style pants. No denim, no open-toed shoes, no bare legs. I wear the logowear a lot, but a suit occasionally depending on what is going one. How about the rest of you…

I agree -- you need to consider the three R's -- recency, relevancy to the job, and recidivism.

I would check your state statutes. I believe our obligations are outlined there.

Ditto to what everyone else is saying. We have multiple locations, but all HR records are kept at the Corporate location. Welcome back to the forum!

Thanks for the advice. I am hoping to find material to use in a training presentation.

I can't help you out with this, but will suggest you contact your state law enforcement agencies to see how they handle it (for example, the highway patrol). Perhaps they will share information with you. Good luck.

We are a $600M bank and we do fingerprint new hires. We do our own fingerprints and run them through the ABA, which has access to the FBI database. You may want to refer to the FDIC pre-employment screening guidance for additional info. You can f…

Agree with others, but wanted to add some additional thoughts to try to stop future conflict. If you have EAP, you may want to see if you can get some assistance for the group or try some teambuilding exercises. Bottom line is this -- you don't ha…

LAST EDITED ON 04-18-06 AT 06:14AM (CST)[br][br]I'm sure some lessons have been learned here by those involved. Practices in place -- we use only direct deposit. Another thing you could do is have a policy tha…

To me, the term supervisor relates to any person whose duties include hiring, firing (or recommending termmination), and appraising the performance of another person or persons. It doesn't matter to me if they are white collar or blue collar -- the…

Before I can offer anything, I need you to explain the statement "we do not observe FMLA." Does this mean that you do not meet the criteria to have to follow that law or are you meaning something else?
-
Please keep us posted on the outcome. Thanks and good luck!

Given the size of the employer, it would seem FMLA would not apply. Then, I would look at policies (if any exist). If there is no guidance here, I would ask for a doctor's statement outlining the recovery period following this surgery. I would as…

We've been doing a couple of things to prepare for the predicted shortage. One is that we have been more flexible with our employees who wish to retire and have arranged some phased retirements so we can keep them around as long as possible. Anoth…
