This is a great video with a customer service message. I was "moved" when I first saw it and very few things do that to me. Turn on your speakers and Enjoy! http://www.stservicemovie.com/

Interesting article -- I am sharing it with the rest of our corporate management team. Yesterday, our Governor announced that state employees will no longer be able to smoke on any state campuses (the grounds around the buildings). I would like t…

I, for one, appreciate the new (or renewed?) professionalism of the site. It takes me a lot less time to wade through the posts when they are more on track and there is less personal attacking going on than offering of professional advice (my opini…

Not sure I would know how to disable my profile so if mine is disabled it's an accident!

I too was there -- it was SOOOOO crowded this year -- one of the biggest, I think. Didn't see any stars, but tried to stay out of Sturgis during the busy times. Enjoyed riding around the hills -- stayed in Deadwood -- I love that little town!

I can't top these stories, but sat in my office and laughed out loud when I read them. That always keeps the staff wondering about you when you are laughing by yourself! Have a good weekend, everyone!

We are open until noon (we're a bank). It's nice and quiet in HR and I intend to go through the pile of papers on my desk -- it's a good time to get some things done! Happy Holidays from the great state of South Dakota!

Just checking in again to make sure you are doing ok. Someone earlier mentioned the concept of paying yourself what you would have spent on cigarettes -- it is a great idea -- I started out doing that and it was amazing how quickly the money piled …

Hang on, you CAN do it! I quit after smoking from ages 15-35 -- it was one of the toughest things I ever did, but boy I am glad. My brother committed suicide this May after having been diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer in March -- it is a horr…

Each winter, our fair city is invaded by thousands of Canada Geese. One of their favorite places is the lake near our State Capitol Building. You can walk by, even with dog, and they will walk (not fly) out of your way, but they quickly return to …

We don't experience the seasonal fluctuations you described, but I think accruing on paid hours is a good way to handle it. In other words, any unpaid time off does not count for purposes of accruing leave.

We are a bank as well. We have a "no visible tattoos" policy and have had no problems with it. We do periodically have to remind folks. I tell them, "I cover mine, you have to cover yours."
-
I would suggest taking it a step further and stating, "Are you able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation?" I think that would be an acceptable question under the ADA and would cover all essent…

For federal purposes, it varies by law. We keep our files for seven years. There are some types of records that have to be kept longer, depending upon the industry (we are in banking). In addition, you will want to check your state laws which you…

I have also had very good luck getting the required federal posters from our local Career Centers (formerly Job Service). Free as well!

In our company (Bank) the assistant is titled an HR Specialist and manages our HRIS, handles new-hire paperwork, coordinates payroll issues with finance (but does not process payroll -- that is done in finance), helps supervisors with interviews, se…

Here is some sample language on tattoos: While tattoos are a matter of personal choice, management has made the decision that all tattoos will be covered while performing the duties of your job at (COMPANY NAME). Here is some sample language on pi…

I have not used this company, but it was recommended to me by a reputable consulting firm. It is called Justifacts Credential Verfication, Inc. You can reach them toll-free at 1-800-356-6885. They will send you an information packet upon your req…

I am also with a bank and have been told by our compliance department that we cannot require our employees to deposit their pay only with our bank. So, we let them designate where they want the deposit made. Haven't run into any problems with that…

I'm not familiar with AZ regs, and don't know of a federal reg that requires early payment. Our practice is to pay on the 25th. If the 25th is a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, we pay early. I agree with the others that it would be a nice thing to …
-
If I understand the reg correctly (which is always questionable), they have to meet all four criteria in order for it NOT to be counted as hours worked. Not sure that helps, but if in doubt, I would say count it. Cheryl

Our exempts and non-exempts are on the same payroll period. We pay monthly. Several years ago, we had to do something similar to go from paying on the 25th for the full month (through the end of the month) to get to where we are now paying in arre…

Bank, 240 Employees, payroll is processed primarily by finance, with HR as backup. HR enters all the changes.

I am in banking as well and use this firm. They have been very helpful.

Dutch2, I'm in banking as well. I'm curious what company you used that specialized in banks -- would you mind sharing the name and contact information? Thanks, Cheryl

I don't know the answer, but would suggest you consult with a tax advisor or CPA.

Welcome to the forum. Our state Department of Labor has a Labor Market Information Center (LMIC) that provides an annual statewide salary survey of major occupations in our state. You may contact the one in your state to see if they do the same. …

I agree that a graphic designer should be non-exempt. Don't confuse salaried with exempt. We have many salaried, non-exempts who get OT for anything over 40 hours in a week. The salaried part relates to the fact that we pay them a set monthly sal…

We are a bank. A while back we went from a 37.5 hour work-week to 40 hours. Many were already working 40 before the change, but we did not pay extra for the hours between 37.5 and 40. We stressed the importance of doing as much as we could with o…

Thanks, Don. I'm still looking for resources.
