The general idea of dirty Santa is that everyone brings a gift that could be for anyone. You don't put your name or anyone else's on the gift. You put the gifts on a table and everyone draws a number -- that's the order you pick your gifts in. So t…

When I saw Paul's first post in this thread, I asked him if he would write a post for our Technology for HR blog. He graciously complied -- giving me enough material for three blog posts. [URL="http://hr…

Sounds like catching employees in the act has less to do with high tech or low tech and more to do with employee stupidity/overconfidence/underestimation of HR.

Definitely Ralphie! My family has actually eaten at a Chinese place for Christmas dinner. My mom was always annoyingly right in her predictions of bad ends to ill advised gift wishes (I never shot my eye out, though). Unlike Ralphie, I would love …

I have another question: Has anyone ever had a problem with an employee being offended by Halloween celebrations (in general or a response to a particular costume/decoration/etc)? I do a lot of research/reading on workplace diversity and there seem…

Slater has plead guilty and "accepted responsibility" for his actions. You can read about it all here http://bit.ly/9tuuAY. The thing I find most interesting is tucked down at the bottom of the story where they are conceding that Slater'…

I would like to clarify that Molly only suggested doing the check on your final few candidates -- even after the first face-to-face. Otherwise, you'd be spending way too much time trolling the Internet. And she also admonished that you need to be c…

Since this is the current Facebook thread, I'm going to put it here, even though it's a little off topic. A school board in Connecticut has agreed to a settlement where a newly hired superintendent resigns but get his $150,000 salary and benefits f…

I am a huge fan of snopes.com for checking on stories like this. I wonder how many people read the article in the Post and realized they were part of the crowd that didn't appreciate the renowned violinist and what their reactions were.

Paul, do you know if the Facebook post was what ultimately got him the help or if he texted someone? I hate to imagine my mom or dad logging on to Facebook one morning and seeing that and being really upset. But, on the other hand, maybe one of my …

I agree with ritaanz that you have to go with your gut. But I've been fooled more than once by someone who basically convinced me to mistrust that gut feeling. I've ordered the book because I think it will be useful to have this sort of information…

I'm not sure if this is a joke or not. It's a message that is supposedly on the answering machine at a school in Australia. Real or not, I know that there are several educators out there who feel like this. I sent it to my dad, who is a guidance cou…

I saw him referred to as a "folk hero" and even an "icon" for all the workers who are fed up with their jobs, bosses, and coworkers on different news casts last night. He should be making the rounds of the day and night talk shows soon . . .

Sort of creepy how half the comments on that post are asking for an interview. I'm disappointed that he didn't have more to say about the actual show down. And Paul, I'm with you -- taking the beer and going down the emergency slide is a grand exit.
