I understand the 'caring compassionate employer' part, but to Julie's point - I think we probably grant FMLA in a lot of caregiver situations that don't qualify. I'm pretty quick to grant FMLA for the employee's illness, but I scrutinize caregiver …

Actually, Dutch, I think you should have already been doing this... Didn't Missouri law start requiring it in '08?
Great run down Nae! You're too funny.
But not in a good way, Beth says.

We're on the system, and I ask employees and their supervisors to "approve" all timesheets. I like having that last arrow in my quiver when I'm trying to prove the timesheets are either accurate or were regarded as accurate by the employee. It's j…

Hey, there are plenty of reasons to fire employees that don't include insubordination... insolence included. I was just going by the legal definition.

I love the comments following the crime stories... apparently most of the people posting think it is their opportunity to catch the eye of Lifetime Network or Patricia Cornwell's literary agent. It doesn't matter how baseless the speculation - they…

We require our MLOs to spend a significant amount of time on the street. Typically, they're only in the office about 2 hours a day - our last one would "check in" every other day or so. We classify them as exempt based on the outside sales tests.

We don't hire people who have had kidney stones, so don't send him my way.

It's certainly a terminable offense in most workplaces, but it probably isn't insubordination. (I have this discussion with our VPs and branch managers frequently.) While there are a variety of court rulings that help define insubordination, they …

You could show Brian's Song, if you want to see your male co-workers cry.

Don was getting ready to come back to the forum, but he's busy consulting on Virginia's Confederate History Month.

Hey, if people start believing in werewolves, I'm as good as dead. Sooner or later, someone with a silver bullet is going to see me shirtless.

Why, I don't recall this at all, Nae. Not at all. **==

I think I've proven that I'm NOT the expert on FMLA, but for what it's worth... If I want to find a reason to deny FMLA, it's going to be due to a 'hard-coded' requirement - service time, hours worked, etc. Either they make the cut or they don't.…

Okay, this is scary... I'm all over the web, and I'm not listed. Nor is my son (same name). On the other hand, my father (same name), who has NEVER been on the internet and doesn't own a computer, is listed. And all the details are correct.

I have to disagree, Paul. I hope their attorneys suck.

Here's what I think...

Are there any jobs there that could be performed by someone who is blind, or mute?
Sorry, years of public education.
Understood. But why the extra comma?

Sing it with me... "Gumption Junction, what's your function?" Sorry. Years of Schoolhouse Rock, bubbling to the surface.

Still, I would kill for an applicant who showed even half that much gumption! Two weeks ago, I had an applicant postpone (at the last second) an evening second interview. She couldn't come in the next night, because of a 'family committment'. W…

Google has a great history of cool April Fool's pranks.

It's tough to stand out here, because we already have 3-4 people working every intersection. It's crazy.

I think there are probably better ideas, but I don't think the 'sign on the street corner' gig is all that awful, especially if you can provide a gorilla or Statue of Liberty suit to wear. Those seem to be popular here. The open house idea is a gr…

I'll provide as many resources as I can, but I won't do any "actual work" for them. I do have a great local contact with our state unemployment agency who will help with applications, resumes, etc. - if the person needs hands-on assistance I send th…

It's probably the easiest way to NOT get an interview with me.

Two words - Keith Richards.
Nae, I'm surprised that person is still alive! The body can only take so much.
I'm sure most people watching the program will assume Blago is just putting on a show for the cameras. He's not. That's the same crazy Blago who got elected.

I've not experienced this specific issue, but my basic line of devil's advocate reasoning usually leads me to ask the manager these questions: Do you make it through the day when Mr. Smith goes to lunch? When he is away at meetings or conferences? …

You might remind the employee that incarceration is not an "excused" absence. That sometimes works.
