EE's misuse of timeclock

I was extremely upset to be told today that there are several employee's who are misusing the timekeeping system. We went from paper timecards to an online timekeeping system about 9 months ago. Today, I was told that there are some employee's who will take a 2 hour lunch and then come back and clock out upon their return, then clock in after an hour. That way, they are only charged for an hour lunch. (policies specifically state that tampering with the system or not using it appropriately is against policy).

Seems to me that is stealing. How have you addressed this situation with your staff?

You are right. It is stealing. And at past employers if a person was caught doing such a thing, they were terminated. Since you have a policy prohibiting the misuse of the system, it is a clear violation of company policy and should be dealt with accordingly. However, you may want to do some investigation to substatiate the "claims."

I have faced this issue with a paper timecard system - other employees were clocking people in and out so it would look like they were there for the entire shift. Once we investigated and proved the "theft", we terminated the employees involved. If your investigation proves the allegations to be true, then termination sets a great presidence for future employees that want to cheat the system.

I've dealt with that type of situation as theft from the Comapny.

Do anyone know the legalities of time clocks that require the employee's thumb print to clock in? The timeclock is internet based and employees do not want their fingerprints out on the web for someone to use. If an employee refuses to use this system, can they legally be fired?
