Payout after notice?

An employee gave her two week notice but her managers said they don't need her to stay on more than a couple of days.  Should I pay her for the time?  Do I have to pay her?  We usually need people to stay after they give their notice so this is a different twist for me.  Thanks!

  • We usually pay because we figure it's a relatively small price to pay to avoid any problems and it's better than having someone hang around without anything to do.  By not paying I think other employees might decide not to give any notice when they leave and that could leave your company unprepared. I also think you can run into trouble if the employee decides to try to collect UI.
  • I agree with KLeede.  You don't have to pay.  But if you don't other employees will definitely get wind and then they may not give notice.  Also, if the employee files for unemployment they will win.
