Someone in my company asked if we can ask during an interview what an applicant's intentions are for child care. This seems to raise all types of red flags to me. What do you all think?
I would not advise using this question. It opens you up to all sorts of issues and none of them are pleasant. You can certainly tell the applicant that the job requires them to be at work 8-5 Monday through Friday (or whatever the requirements are) and ask if they are able to meet that requirement. It is really none of your company's business how they intend to handle their child care needs. Keep your questions job related.
I certainly wouldn't. And why do you care? Will you also ask if they will use doggie daycare? If they have someone that can water their plants if they have to stay late?
Absolutely raises the red flag. A better question to ask is - "This job requires you to work from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Are you able to work these hours and days?"
