Casual Friday-Blue Jean Day

Our employees have asked for a "Blue Jean" day for each Friday, donating $3.00 for the right. The money will be given to a local charity. The idea has been vetoed by the facility manager as he does not like nor wear blue jeans. My suggestions have included a written outline of what jeans are acceptable, a specific shirt or button that is worn on "Blue Jean" day to identify why employees are out of uniform, and posters placed in the buses (we are a public transportation facility) explaining our mission. Any other ideas to help present this benefit in a positive manner that can win acceptance?

How about some PR for your organization -- a small poster or 8 1/2x11 computer print out saying something like "ABC Public Transportation cares about (name of charity or cause). We are wearing bluejeans for the cause today." And then a short explanation of the particular charity. You could even solicit donations from patrons if you are set up to do this.

You can reassure the manager that employees participating in blue jeans day will still be expected to follow your company's dress code om what's appropriate for the workplace (no ripped jeans or short shorts, for instance), and you can also emphasize that it's not mandatory.

Californian has an excellent idea. If you have salespeople or people that go out into the field, you could make a large button that says this and make them wear it. It shows your community involvement and a little bit of free advertising!

Maybe you could start off small. See if facility manager will approve doing it one Friday a month and put the guidelines in place. Employees could also be required to wear a company shirt in order to maintain a level of professionalism on blue jean day. If it works out slowly move towards every Friday.
