FMLA Time & Vacation Time

We have several employees who will be taking materity leave this year - I'm curious to see how other companies handle this. Do most employers require employees to take all of their vacation time toward the FMLA leave? Or can we even require that? I didn't know if we had to keep that separate and allow them to take their vacation time and still have to allow 12 weeks FMLA for maternity.

The federal government allows your policies to determine if employees are required to take vacation or sick leave while out on FMLA. Unless your state laws forbid it, I recommend that you run any state maternity leave simultaneously with FMLA. You should have this issue clearly addressed and communicated to your employees in your employee handbook/policies.
We require employees to take all leave during FMLA before allowing leave without pay. This avoids situations where employees are gone for long periods of time on FMLA, whatever the reason, and then want to take time off for vacation.
Good luck!
